Scenic Walks
The ruggedness of the Whitsunday Islands might make you think that long bush walks would be arduous. However despite the appearance, all of the graded tracks on South Molle Island are easy walking as the elevations are not great.
Mt Jeffreys: the track winds up a gradual slope to the highest point on South Molle from which you can obtain a 360 degreee view of the island and mainland.
Lamond Hill: the track climbs through forest to Lamond Hill over looking the resort near the top, a plaque has been placed in memory of the Lamond Family
Oyster Bay: after crossing to the islands Southern face, the track passes out of the forest to a rocky mangrove-lined beach. The prevailing south-easterlies have piled driftwood on the shore. Beach rock can be seen at low tide. Planton Island is close by.
Paddle Bay: this track starts at the north-eastern end of the resort. At low tide, you can continue to walk along the rocky causeway that links South Molle Island to Mid Molle. (Ensure that the rising tide does not strand you on the small island)
Sandy Bay: as you approach the beach at Sandy Bay, the vegetation becomes sparse and the beach margins are lined with coastal sheoak (Casuarina eouiselitotis). The wind blowing through a grove of the trees may produce a sighing sound and it has been suggested that “She” in Sheoak is an attempt to reproduce this sound.
Spion Kop: initially the track passes through open eucalypt forest. As you approach an obvious change in vegetation from open forest to rainforest, look to the left hand side of the track, approximately 50 meters into the bush, a colony of flying foxes can usually be seen hanging from the branches in the trees. The track leads on through grassland to slopes covered by windswept forest. Notice that the trees are all leaning one way pushed by the prevailing south-easterly winds.
